Twitter user, Katie Wright, recently noticed what seemed to be a pimple on her face, Pedestrian TV reports. Although, after tugging and squeezing at the inflamed area, Wright realized something was seriously wrong. “A week ago I decided to pick at what I thought was a giant under the skin pimple because it had been hurting for a while and got too painful to ignore,” she wrote on Twitter. “Within an hour my entire face swelled up and HURT. It felt like something was going to burst out of my skin.”

After rushing to the emergency room, Wright was informed that what she thought was a pimple was actually Cellulitis, a form of Staph infection that doctors presumed she had contracted from a dirty eyebrow brush. “Since [the infection]was on my face, there was a huge risk of it spreading to my brain or my eyes causing me to go blind,” Wright explained.

According to dermatologist Marina Peredo, MD, this is fortunately an uncommon incident, however, be on the look out for symptoms of redness, pain, tenderness and warmth since that may mean your “pimple” is something a bit more serious. To prevent this happening to you, Dr. Peredo recommends “good hygiene, always wash your hands coming from public places, and don’t use old makeup or brushes.”
Luckily, Wright has since made a full recovery, however, she’s still urging others to clean their makeup brushes in an attempt to prevent this from happening to someone else. Considering how terrifying this case turned out to be, we’ll certainly be doing a full cleanse of our makeup ASAP.
We’ve reached out to a dermatologist for more information and will update once we hear back.
